It was only made one year, 1990. I have the original box in VG/P6 condition with the Protective Styrofoam case, foam wrappings, instructions & other literature, a 5906 Sound Activation Button in a sealed bag, an unopened bag with a Lionel standard coupler, an unused alternate Front truck, and an unopened tube of liquid smoke. Operating smoke from the stack and steam chest.

Button for bell sound activation. Spoked drivers with metal rims. Remote controlled forward, neutral and reverse. Alternate front truck w/ its instruction sheet.

Will operate well on filtered DC layouts. Separate grab rails and handrails. Retrofit standard O-Gauge Lionel front coupler.

I understand that the original issue had a display case, which is missing. There is a CONGRATULATIONS certificate that comes with the loco with the following details. Lionel claimed in 1990 that this loco is the finest locomotive and tender to ever carry the Lionel builders plate.

This #1-700E was designed to be more versatile and contains more operating features than the #700E. The pilot truck was designed to negotiate tighter radius layouts on tubular track. Therefore, the wheels have tinplate flanges. Four of the driver wheels have flanges: the remaining two do not, allowing the #1-700E to negotiate tightere radius curves. The locomotive and tender drawbar design was reconfigured to allow operation on the majority of O gauge layouts.

The trailing truck and drawbar pin were modified to improve performance. The tender frame and wheel diameters were adapted to allow the tender to follow the locomotive through tighter radius O gauge curves and switches.

Although the boiler casting is new, we were able to create the tender body from the original 1937 #700E tooling, complete with its own characteristic manufacturing process. As a result, on close inspection, you may observe slight variations between your tender and every other. Just as no two snowflakes are alike, your tender is unique one of a kind. There are over 30 display differences from the original #700E " to make your #1-700E more beautiful, better sounding and easier to operate than even the venerable #700E".

I couldnt wait to test this #1-700E on my 10 test track. It ran well in F-N-R. I heard steam engine sounds at start-up. They immediately stopped at shut-down. Bell and whistle sounded on cue.

I did not test the unopened Sound Button. There is a switch under the tender (shown in instruction picture; but, not mentioned) that, I think, is to turn off the steam sounds (I forgot to test it; but, I have another loco with the same feature). I did not test the smoke unit. This is an excellent looking loco. It does show a little dust.

I found one spot on the right rear tender side with what looks like a light paint rub, not a scratch (see PIC close-up). I also found several screws under the tender that have a slight reddish rust color. If there is rust on the screws, they can easily be replaced with no consequences.
